In A SINGLE WAVE, Webb Chiles, one of the most experienced sailors in history, five time circumnavigator, provides the dramatic highlights of two decades in three boats EGREGIOUS, a 37-foot cutter; CHIDIOCK TICHBORNE, an 18-foot open undecked yawl; and RESURGAM, a 36-foot sloop. In these boats he made more than three circumnavigations, twice alone, twice setting world records, twice via Cape Horn, which he was the first American to round alone.

The stories include capsizes in a cyclone in the Tasman and in a storm in the Southern Ocean; drifting for two weeks and three hundred miles in the South Pacific after a swamping west of Fiji; a twenty-six hour swim in the Gulf Stream covering about one hundred and thirty miles after a sinking off Florida; and enough other troubles in exotic climes from Tahiti to the Red Sea to South Africa to Bali to New Jersey.

Webb Chiles has pushed limits, his own and the species, for more than forty years. He still is, presently making his sixth circumnavigation, this time in a 24' ultra-light sloop.

It is often said that Webb Chiles is one of a kind and that few others can describe the beauty and danger of the sea as well as he. He has been called sailing's best living writer.

Writer, poet and sailor, Webb Chiles thinks of himself as an artist. He has said that the artist's defining responsibility is to go to the edge of human experience and send back reports. A SINGLE WAVE consists of some of his most vivid and moving reports.

A Single Wave Stories of Storms and Survival eBook Webb Chiles

An immodest and revisionistic recollection of a true extremist at the top of his game. Chiles points out that we humans never exist in that rare zone of our exploring our ultimate potential, and his stated aim was to do so. So, yes indeed, he set and has retained all or many of these records, and aside from what he focuses on as the inward journey, he is very conscious of his firsts. He claims to exaggerate not at all about conditions at sea--and so on--while claiming that others do so--but his modesty stops abruptly at his interest in letting us all know how great his achievements are. I don't disagree. The book has the feeling of having been written years later, almost as an afterthought, with none of the immediacy and introspection of material that's topical, or at lest written in situ or somewhat nearer to the events. The writing is philosophical and clever, but somehow seems stale. The style is choppy. It's ok. A second-rate accounting of a first-rate adventurer.

A Single Wave Stories of Storms and Survival eBook Webb Chiles Reviews

Fantastic story for those who enjoy adventures on the seas. It is difficult to imagine why the author is still alive.
Webb Chiles doing what he knows best, describing the difficulties and joys of living a life abroad and at sea. A must read for anyone in love with the idea of 'chopping the dock lines' and heading out.
I've read Of his books, and known Webb for a few years. This anthology, or "best of" as he described it to me, is also the best composed, most readable, most interesting, and I'd argue - most illuminating.
Inspiring and surprising, especially the sinking of Resurgam. I didn't see that one coming and having followed Webb Chiles for a few years was a bit taken aback. Mad respect for someone willing to openly write about suicide so openly and deeply impactful on this young reader and aspiring sailor-as-artist.
Webb Chiles, as always, conveys the gamut of emotions he experiences in challenging himself and his boats in the world's roughest seas. His fortitude, stamina, and perseverance in the most dire situations will inspire any sailor. His self reliance is a reminder of what a cushy, entitled environment we indulge in the Western World.
Webb Chiles' book, A Single Wave is one of those books you don't put down until you've finished it. And even then, you find yourself going back and re-reading parts of it over and over again. If you aren't a sailor, you will still find his true-life adventures amazing and exciting. If you are a sailor, then you will truly appreciate his ability to describe his experiences at sea in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. A good read, I recommend it.
